Our parliamentarians had better take a lesson from their counterparts in Newzealand who have recently passed a law prohibiting issuance of arms licence for the automatic heavy weaponry which, according to them, could only be kept by the armed forces. This was done in the wake of indiscriminate firing incident in Christchurch a couple of months back in which quite a number of Muslims were killed in a mosque by a religious fanatic. The New Zealand parliament has passed a law under which any person in possession of heavy automatic weaponry could be jailed up to three years. This is how the conscientious representatives of the people react. On the contrary the weapons which should be carried only by the defence or para military forces or the police are found in abundance with every Tom , Dick and Hary in this unfortunate country and our parliamentarians are insensitive to the hundreds of incidents of killings by use of them every year in the country. So many times attempts made by some governments in the past to rid the country of heavy automatic weaponry by carrying out operation clean-up failed due to political expediences.
Let us admit there is no dearth of such religious fanatics in this country also who don’t mind killing their Muslim brethren only because they hold opinion on some religious issues which is at variance with the one held by them. We have a very poor track record, insofar, as sectarianism is concerned . Dozens of people get killed on this score every year with the use of automatic weaponry. Isn’t it proper time now for the government to do something concrete in the matter and rid the society of use of heavy weaponry?
