What Maulana Fazlur Rehman did try but could not do has been tried and achieved by Bilawal. By making almost all the leading opposition leaders attend his Iftar dinner recently and then making them agree on taking to the streets against the government after Eid ul Fitr, the PPP chairman had,to all intents and purposes, declared open season on the government. Mindful of the fact that the anger of the common man will have doubled over the further price hike in essential commodities after the imposition of more taxes in the federal budget soon after Eid,the opposition leaders in their own wisdom consider it an opportune time to embarrass the government. Though Maulana Sirajul Haque has said his party is not going to be a part of the proposed agitation, odds are that he might reconsider his decision if all the opposition leaders request him to join their ranks. He is not that much politically naive as to not realise in his heart of hearts that the JI might not achieve anything by going it alone.
What is worrisome is the fact that any political unrest and turmoil in the country at this point in time when the work on the CPEC is in its crucial stage can prove disastrous for the country’s economy which would be damaged beyond repairs,if God forbid,it hit a snag and is held up for one reason or the other and this is precisely what our enemies are looking for.
Protest is the inherent democratic right of every person but the opposition should not forget that the country’s stability and sovereignty is far important than any thing else. The fear is that anti-state element might not take advantage of this agitation by indulging in acts of terrorism.
