Time was when people used to laugh at the strength and market value of Afghanistani currency by saying that one has to carry it sackful to the vegetable market for buying tomatoes. Today the strength of our currency has hit rock bottom, behind even that of Afghan currency The currencies of countries like Nepal, Bangla Desh , Bhutan, Thailand, South Africa and India, to mention a few, are much stronger than ours. While one dollar fetches as many as 150 Pakistani rupees, it is equal. to 79 Afghanis, 70 Indian rupees, 84 Bangla Deshi Takka, 112 Nepali rupees, 69 Bhutani Ngultrum, 32 Thai’s Baht and 14 South African’s rand .
Isn’t it shameful? The present pitiable position of Pakistani currency in the world market is the cumulative effect of the inept economic policies pursued by those who called the shots in the corridors of power during the past twenty years. The nation should never forgive them. It is another matter that if the present rulers also followed the suit and continued with the same economic policies that were followed by their predecessors the confusion would become worse confounded and instead of improvement the economic condition of the country would further deteriorate.
The death of teenager son of PPP’ s leader Qamarzaman Qaira recently in a car accident was a tragic event which once again brought to the fore two harsh realities. First, overspeeding and second negligence of parents to allow their teenagers to sit on the wheels. The deceased was reported to be only 17. Is a person under 18 legally authorised to drive a car?Should not the traffic police be called on the carpet for allowing persons under 18 to drive vehicles?
