Nobody in his sane mind would buy the demand of the opposition for a mid-term election at this point in time. It would be suicidal to change horses in the midstream. Even the worst detractors of Imran Khan would admit that most of the problems being faced by his government were not of his own making;on the contrary he has inherited them. He needs sufficient time to sort them out so that the country finds its feet. Election is a very costly exercise involving prohibitive expenditure which this foreign loans- ridden country simply cannot afford. Work on the gigantic developmental projects like the CPEC is underway. In the same manner big social welfare projects in almost every sphere of life are in the various stages of implementation and their gestation period would take some time. Another general election without any rhyme and reason would put a damper on them and set the country back by a couple of years. The opposition must have realised that the man in the street is in no mood to take to the street now. He is in favour of giving a fair chance to the government to prove its worth and make good on its promises made with the electorate at the hustings. The rulers should also realise that those who have voted them into power are watching every step of theirs with a critical eye and in case they tried to hoodwink them they won’t be spared at the next polls. The rulers must keep their word if they want to live in the heart of the common people.
Almost one year of the constitutional stint in office of the present government is over. It is a matter of another two to three years before the election year starts and the opposition must have a heart and wait till then.
