The prime minister is to fly into Washington in a couple of days.It is not yet fully known whether he has been formally invited by the tenant of the White House or it is the same old customary visit to the US which every Pakistani new ruler has been undertaking soon after assuming charge of his office.The Pakistani rulers have been notorious in this respect and their first port of call has always been Washington .They also fancy undertaking Umra at the Taxpayers’money .
There are many who are raising their eyebrows over the proposed visit by saying that it would have been prudent had he first gone to Moscow instead of going to Washington!It is we who should be taking initiative in mending fences with the Kremlin as in the past in our blind allegiance to the US we had played the role of front state of the US against the then Soviet Union.Moscow still views with suspicion our leaders most of whom it considers to be America’s toadies .Let us hope Imran Khan would not follow suit and Pakistan under his leadership would steer clear of Washington’s inbuilt pathological hatred of Russia.
There is no denying the fact that the American CIA played a pre-dominant role in the break-up of the mighty Soviet empire and the old dyed-in-the -wool communists like Putin are still licking the wounds inflicted on them by the Americans who had been instrumental in breaking Soviet Union.There is no love lost between Moscow and Washington .Putin has been,lately,desperately trying to rebuild his country but the Americans don’t want renaissance of Moscow in any case.
Due to changed ground realities in this region Pakistan should take lesson from the past and avoid putting all its eggs in the basket of America.
