Hameedi is no more.He silently went to the place where no body returns from.I wonder how many of us know who he was?Our so-called TV anchors should hang their heads in shame.Wasnt it their professional and national duty to telecast special condolence programme on the demise of this hockey supremo who represented Pakistan’s hockey in four world Olympics and won the first gold medal in hockey for his country in the Rome Olympics in 1960 thus making Pakistan as world hockey champion?
Other countries make special documentaries of their heroes in every walk of life. The other day the Indian official TV channel ran a special documentary on the all-time great India’s centre forward Dyan Chand who, undoubtedly ,had been the best centre forward world had ever seen. We,on the contrary, never project our heroes.
The final hockey match between India and Pakistan in the Rome’s world Olympics was as important as the fourth cricket test match between England and Pakistan in the Oval during the visit to England of our cricket team in 1954.By winning it Pakistan had established its identity in the cricket world Winning gold medal in hockey in the Rome Olympics in 1960 under the leadership of captain Abdul Hameed alias Hameedi Pakistan meant that Pakistan’s hockey had come of age
Unfortunately most of the members of our hockey team that won gold medal for us have joined the great majority. Those who are alive must be in the autumn of their life. There are a host of TV channels in the country.Let us hope that some of them without wasting any more time produce documentaries on the performance of our hockey players in the Rome olympics by communicating with them.
