Many economists believe that money deposited with the government under zakat head of account only simply cannot meet the requirements of the social welfare state unless it is augmented with other taxes like the income and wealth tax.The chairman of the FBR was,therefore,right when he emphasised the need of spreading the tax net far and wide.The filthy rich cannot get away with the excuse that since they pay zakat they should not be made liable to pay other taxes.This is an absurd reason.Had they been paying zakat strictly under the Islamic in junctions ,not a single person in this country would have been left destitute.The very fact that more than half of the country’s population is living below the poverty line means that every one of us is not paying the zakat amount due to us correctly.This issue also requires independent investigation.
The campaign of the NAB to bring to book those involved in mega corruption cases is gaining momentum by the day but a great deal would depend on the quality of investigation being made by its mandarins.Experience of hindsight reveals that many such high profile corruption cases fail in the courts not because those accused in them are innocent but because the Prosecution does not do homework properly and conduct these cases in a a very casual manner.The NAB had better engage reputed able lawyers from the market for the assistance of its investigators just like the accused utilise their services for putting up their defence before the trial courts.
POSTSCRIPT: Instead of crying over the spilt milk the PCB should start afresh for grooming three different cricket teams,one for the test ,second for the Twenty20 and the third for the ODIs straightaway.It should plan with an eye on the next World Cup due in 2023.
