Trump is reputed to be a whimsical man but one of his recent statement that the US should not have indulged in Afghan war makes sense and amounts to a belated realisation of the fact that Washington had blundered by sending its troops to Afghanistan. He has reportedly said that his government wants an early pull out of American forces from Afghanistan.
It goes without saying that there had been a tremendous goodwill for the Americans in almost all sections of Afghanistan’ s society soon after the Soviet forces were made to leave Afghanistan after an heroic fight back by the Afghan mujahideen with the active material help of the Americans. That was the proper time when Washington could have cashed on it by helping Afghanistan in the reconstruction of its physical infrastructure in a big way on the pattern of the Marshal plan but instead it left Afghanistan in post-haste once it accomplished its task which was to see the back of the last Soviet armyman from the Afghan soil. Osama would never have dared to take refuge in Afghanistan then and the Afghans would have also thought twice before giving him refuge in that case which ultimately led to nine-eleven.
As they say better late than never. Even now if the Americans realise their folly and decide to pull out from Afghanistan, so much the better. It is an un winnable war. The Americans are still licking the wounds of their defeat in the Vietnam war back in late 1960s. They should ensure that Afghanistan doesn’t become another Vietnam for them and for that the earlier they pull out from the Afghan soil the better. Any American hawk who thinks that Washington can win the Afghan war should have his head examined.
