Fuel price has fallen tremendously in the international market but its benefit is not being passed on correspondingly to the common man in this country by the government. What a pity our rulers shamefacedly jack up petrol price whenever there is an increase in its price in the international market but when there is a reduction in its price they, instead of reducing its price to the extent it should be slashed, just go through the motions by giving a slight relief to the consumers which amounts to a pittance. Whenever there is an increase in fuel price, the transporters also increase the fare of their buses and wagons which were then never reduced by them even if the government reduces the fuel price. The increase in fuel price sets in motion a chain reaction and the price index of essential commodities also go up. The district administration and Food authorities, whose job it is to keep the price index of edibles within a reasonable limit and reach of the common man never bother to put their foot down in the matter.
Hasn’t time come when the politicians find out better methods of registering their protests with the government over issues and do not inconvenience the general public and interfere with their daily chores of life? The modus operandi which they presently adopt creates a big public nuisance. They block the thoroughfares without thinking how would the serious patients needing urgent medical attention reach hospitals. . A recent case in point was the hanging of Mumtaz Qadri which paralysed the federal capital for full two days bringing to a standstill life in many area.
Maulana Fazlur Rehman is, perhaps, the shrewdest exponent of the type of politics that is practised in this country. He has hit the nail on the head by saying recently that they don’t win too many seats in elections but they can bring down any government if they want to. By ‘they’ he meant the religious bigwigs of the country. Truer words were never spoken. It is difficult to judge which side is he on? Apparently he feels piqued by the recent Bill passed by the Panjab assembly in respect of violence against the women, which he says, is heavily tilted towards the women. But mind you, he is never going to heed to the advice that why doesn’t he resign if he considers the Bill in question as un-Islamic? Who wants to kill the goose that lays the golden egg?
