Time was when streets of Karachi used to be swept with water daily after midnight by the Sanitation staff of Karachi Municipal Corporation. It was the cleanest city of the country once.Today reverse is the case.It is the most dirtiest city of Pakistan.
Lack of good governance is the root cause of the issue. All those who have been moving in the corridors of power in Karachi since 1960 are collectively responsible for it.Nobody has bothered to provide adequate drainage system alongside the roads .Neither have any body stopped people making houses in the areas which lay in the way of water nullahs and provided natural outlet and passage to flood water.
Likewise, the Municipal staff responsible for cleaning the water channels on daily basis also didn’t perform their duty well with the result that litter which increased by the day virtually blocked water channels thus resulting in the inundation of roads and houses whenever there are heavy rains.Had they carried out their basic duties and not allowed anybody to throw garbage in the water drains, the rain water would never have flooded the roads and houses.
The people too are,to a great extent, responsible for not keeping their physical environment clean. Instead of binning the refuse of their house in proper garbage drums they throw it in the water exit channels thus choking them which results in flooding during rains. As if that wasn’t enough Karachi has also become a crime city over the years. It needs a mayor or administrator of the calibre of Rudi Gulliani who during his stint as mayor of New York city between 1994 and 2002 had rooted out crime from the city thus making it the safest city of the US.
