India is ten times bigger in size than us. Right from day one after the partition of the sub-continent it has been breathing down our neck, creating one problem after another for us and dilly dallying in the solution of many outstanding problems which we have with it. Perhaps, the Indus basin treaty was the only accord which it has signed with us in over 72 years’period.
There is no gainsaying the fact that our armed forces have been zealously guarding the geographical frontiers of the country and we can pride on the fact that they are the best in the Islamic world, second to none. At the international level too they enjoy tremendous respect for their professionalism and valour. 1965 war with India , in particular, was a case in point.
It won’t be a bad idea if the powers that be decide that henceforth military training would be compulsory for every able-bodied Pakistan no matter which profession he works in. He should be imparted military training the way a soldier is trained for a specified period after which he should revert to his original place of duty and profession. In this way every Pakistani would be a trained soldier who can be called upon to assist the regular armed forces in case of war with enemy countries.
Time, perhaps, has come when those who move in the corridors of power get their priorities right and give special attention to the cause of science and technology in the country We should progress in this field to the extent that we should be producing our own weaponry and should never be dependent on the other countries for the supply of spare parts of our weaponry in times of war.
