The tradition of sit-in, long March or lock-down has gained currency in this country, lately, which isn’t good for the democratic and economic health of the country. This trend is extremely dangerous and needs to be discouraged as it has the potentiality to promote anarchy in the country. What is the need of going through a long, tedious and costly exercise for electing a government for 5 years through elections if it could be dismantled after a year or so of its coming into power through brute force of a mob comprising a couple of thousands of people? Whosoever established this practice of sit-in certainly didn’t apply his mind as to its ill-effect of it. Neither did he think that in case he is in power this can boomerang on him also and he can be hoisted with his own petard.
A parliamentary democracy can function effectively only if parliament is strengthened both by the government and the opposition after discussing threadbare every issue under the sun if they have difference of opinion on it and hiding nothing from each other. It is the duty of the opposition that it shouldn’t indulge in criticism for the sake of criticism. It should have alternative programme for any scheme of the government, which in its wisdom, is inadequate which it must share with parliament.
The courts are there to adjudicate on any issue if the government or the opposition, wants to get it clarified whether or not it is commensurate with the provisions of the constitution. Parliamentry democracy succeeds only if its important pillars, the executive, the, judiciary, parliament and the Fourth Estate are allowed to work strictly in accordance with the constitution and no one is allowed to encourage on the preserves of the other.
