ISLAMABAD, December 9: President Dr. Arif Alvi has said Pakistan is passing through a defining moment where corrupt elements are being held accountable across the board. Addressing a seminar in connection with International Anti-Corruption Day in Islamabad on Monday, the President said it is a new era in Pakistan as there is a realization amongst the people that the country was plundered over the last seventy years.
He regretted that in the past, accountability was used for political victimization but now there is a hope in the country that this process will move forward in an apolitical manner.
The President said all citizens were equally accountable before law, however regretted that different treatment meted out to elite and common man was still a challenging scenario. He said unless the powerful person surrenders before law, the process of accountability should not be extended to the weaker segments.
Dr Arif Alvi said Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf included in its manifesto a strong campaign against corruption and called for taking more steps to bring improvement in electoral system to ensure transparency. He said every state institution had a responsibility to check corruption, adding that citizens could end corruption in politics by rightly choosing the power of vote. – NNI
