A Godless society may survive but an unjust won’t, so says an age old adage. Look at the monthly electricity bills of the consumers. If, for instance, the cost of electricity consumed by a consumer is RS 3000, another 3000 or sometimes more than that amount is added in the bill under various surcharges like the fuel adjustment charges TV bills etc etc. The common man is being exploited economically since long. If for an argument’sake one admits the reason advanced by the government that this additional burden is being put on the shoulder of the common man because it has to clear the backlog of loans which the previous rulers had taken from the IMF, may one ask it why the common man alone should be made sacrificial lamb? Why don’t the rulers and financial managers impose s tax, say like a standard of living tax on the filthy rich of the country? Those who live in palace -like residences in whose car porch are parked more than one forcar and limousines bought by them on prohibitive cost? Why should the Standard of living tax be not imposed on those whose who incur monthly education fee of the schools of their children running into lakhs of rupees ?Why should those be not brought under the net of this tax who travel first class or in the business class to Europe, America and Emirates more than once every year ?Why the rich agriculturists and mill owners remain outside this tax net?All this expenditure already stands documented.
The common man is perplexed. He cannot see any light at the end of the tunnel. The opposition leaders stand discredited because of their massive corruption when they were in power and therefore they don’t inspire people’s confidence. The rulers shouldn’t lose sight of the fact that there is always s limit up to which the man in the street can endure economic hardship in the hope of seeing better days and the time limit of that endurance is fast running out.
