ISLAMABAD, January 20: Azerbaijan holds Pakistan in high esteem because it was one of the countires which firstly recognized it after its independence and established diplomatic relations with it. This was stated by the Ambassador of the Republic of Azerbaijan to Pakistan, His Excellency Ali Alizada while addressing a commemorative ceremony of the 20th January Martyrs of Azerbaijan here on Monday.
He said that because of the aggressive policies of Aremenia and the occupation of the territories of Azerbaijan, Pakistan did not recognize and establish diplomatic relations with Aremenia as a state and we highly value this approach of our brotherly country .
The Ambassador added that both Pakistan and Azerbaijan share a lot of similarities with regard to their independence and in many other cases. He also paid rich tribute to all those who laid their lives for the cause of Pakistan.
On this occasion on the call of the Ambassador one minute silence was also observed to pay homage to the martyrs.
Addressing the ceremony Chancellor Preston University Dr. Abdul Basit termed the January 20th tragedy as a major milestone in the history of Azerbaijan. He also recounted the attrocities the people of Azerbaijan had to undergo for the cause of indpendence.
Mr. Sajid Munir, Director Lok Virsa also addressed the ceremony.
At the end position holder students of art competition were awarded with shields and cash prizes.
Earlier the Ambassador inagurated the art exhibition , Chancellor of Preston University, Dr. Abdul Basit, diplomats of foreign countries, students and well-known artists, craftsmen, the public and mass media attended the opening ceremony .
