The performance of present parliament is as dismal as was that of its two predecessor parliaments. It might have improved had the PM kept his word and attended its sessions atleast once a week as promised by him at the last hustings. Had he shown interest in the matter, the attendance position of his cabinet ministers and his party’s MNAs too would have shown improvement. It is a pity that a majority of the MNAs is simply not taking parliamentary proceedings seriously, which more often than not, is creating quorum problem for its speaker.
What are parliamentary whips for ?Their primary duty is to ensure that their party MNAs should be present in the NA at the appointed time and date but it seems that they are either toothless creatures who exercise no control, whatever, over them or they aren’t taking their job seriously.
The general perception which is gradually taking roots in the country is that that parliamentary democracy has failed to deliver and it isn’t a panacea for the woes of the common man who doesn’t know where his next meal is going to come from. A consensus is gradually developing that time has, perhaps, come when there should be a new social contract between the rulers and the ruled
It is not difficult to fathom as to why the Democratic values could not develop in parliament. How can they develop, when the political parties whose members sit in parliament are bereft of them. Dynastic politics reign supreme in almost all political parties barring one or two.
POSTSCRIPT: The trio of Naseem Shah Abbas and Shaheen Afridi has the potential to develop into a lethal fast bowling attack provided these pacemen are properly groomed and used sparingly in really crucial matches only so that they do not burn out soon.
