Faith. Flag. Fron-tiers. And Forces. Around these four “Fs” is built the edifice of our patriotism. Three of these “Fs” are common with most of the nations of the world. The “F” of Faith is what makes Pakistan a unique country – paralleled only by Israel on the globe. Ironically these two unique countries on the world map epitomize a historic acrimony, which may have great consequences in the shaping of the world’s future. What makes them identical is the fact that they were both conceived in the womb of Faith. Pakistan’s mother is Islam, and that of Israel is Judaism. No matter what the secularists say and no matter how they philosophise their ideas, the fact remains that without Judaism, Israel will not exist, and without Islam there will be no Pakistan. Our flag, our frontiers and our forces, all owe their identity, their ethos and their existence to the one “F” that defines Pakistan in totality. For me each 6th of September since 1965 brings back the memories of a heroic resolve—a resolve that created martyrs like Aziz Bhatti and victors like M.M Alam. I was a young man of twentysix then. And as Executive Editor of Daily Kohistan—-the country’s second biggest newspaper was virtually a participant in the making of a new history. It was more than a war for me. It was a reason—an opportunity to rediscover the invincible Will that rose from the deserts of Arabia in the early years of the seventh century, and spread like wild and uncontrollable fire across the oceans all over the globe. Pakistan is the embodiment of that Will. And each one of us is a Soldier and a General in the cause of defending this ‘Will’ against all its enemies.
