Unless Bilawal sheds the extra baggage of Zardari, gives him a wide berth and stops treading the beaten path, it won’t be able for the PPP to bounce back in Panjab which once used to be its political stronghold. Bilawal’s recent extensive meet-the-people campaign in Lahore was nothing more than an exercise in futility as his father had, during 2008 and 2018, distanced himself from those genuine political workers of Panjab who once were the mainstay of that party in Panjab. They were farmed out by Zardari and replaced by his blue_eyed boys. In the last polls the PPP found it difficult to get suitable candidates for contesting national and provincial assembly elections. At the moment things are more or less the same
It doesn’t lie in the mouth of the PPP’s top echelon to use now the slogan of Roti, Kapra and Makan, as it didn’t translate it into reality during its three stints in power, therefore, it will have to coin some new public eye catching political slogan if it wants to remain in the reckoning . Rejuvenation of the PPP in the thickly populated province of Panjab is going to be a helluva job for the PPP. Its leadership has a lot to live down . Its performance is Sindh where it has been in power since long does not inspire much confidence and therefore is not going to help it in any way to make any inroad in Panjab unless Bilawal carries out massive revolutionary changes in the various tiers of his party in Panjab replacing the old faces which were responsible for its downfall .
In their hearts of heart both the PPP and Nawaz League leaders don’t trust each other . It is too early to say whether in the next elections they would put up a United front or go their own way.
