Let us hope that the American interlocutors will have suceeded hammering out some formula of the present Afghan political crisis before the publication of this column. The fact that two persons are simultaneously holding the office of Afghanistan’s president has made them a laughing stock of the world.
India would never like that the recent Accord between the Taliban and the Americans should succeed.
It is in the interest of both Pakistan and Afghanistan that there is peace in the region. It is also essential that no outside country should use the soil of these two countries for the achievement of its political objectives. Isn’t it a fact that the Afghan territory has always been used by India for a fairly long time after 1947 as a launching pad for carrying out subversive activities inside Pakistan through its paid agents ?Likewise, the Americans used our soil in their military support to the Afghan mujahideen against the Soviet Russia. Such mistakes should never be repeated in future if peace is to be achieved in this region.
POSTSCRIPT: Shahbaz Sharif has returned. Once there is a let up in the scare created by the coronavirus, the political activity in the country is going to pick up momentum once again though the coming month of Ramadan and the scorching heat of summer which is also on the anvil might dampen it to a great extent. The opposition leaders might well have to wait till September to come to the streets. A lot will depend on the next year’s financial budget. If it turns out to be people_friendly in the true sense of the word it would put a damper on the political designs of the opposition to a great extent.
