Pakistan’s new Minister of Interior Chau-dhry Nisar Ali Khan seems to be determined to bring about a qualitative turnaround in the manner this ministry was run in the recent past. Each and every aspect of this ‘ministry’ seemed to be carrying the stamp of Mr. Rahman Malik’s multi-faceted personality. On the one hand he gave the impression of being a laughter-generating clown in a play of serious tragedy. And on the other hand he exuded the aura of a foxy character who had the capability of both—creating trouble and shooting it. More often than not his ministry gave the impression of being a facilitating arm of the astronomical business operations that he was conducting behind the scene on his own behalf, or on the behalf of his patron-in-chief President Zardari.
In between Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan and Mr. Rahman Malik, the Ministry came to be headed by another clownish character who had often no idea of what he was doing.
In his remarkably meaningful press conference on the 20th of June 2013, Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan made it clear that he had arrived to make a visible difference. Some of the steps he has promised to take, and some of the decisions, he has vowed to push through deserve unrestrained laurels. We do deserve a dramatic departure from ‘the sick’ practices we have incorporated in our political culture from where these have infiltrated into our whole society.
The kind of life adopted by our ruling classes in the name of security and protocol etc, has created a sense of great inequality and distress among the general masses. It is hoped that Chaudhry Nisar Ali Khan will not confine his noble goals to merely statements, and practical steps will be taken to make us feel that the change is really occurring.
