ISLAMABAD, December 17: Every year on December 18, Minorities Rights Day is commemorated in India. The purpose is to educate people of India about rights of minorities that have been guaranteed in the Indian constitution. However, practically Indian minorities are facing miserable condition under the Hindutva-inspired regime that believes in Hindu domination. The Indian security forces have turned IIOJ&K into an open air prison; while on the other side, Indian minorities are at the receiving end of saffron terrorism. The Western powers, often claim to be the champions of human & minorities rights, have failed to hold India accountable for its bad human right record because of their vested interests. The international community must take notice of gross minorities rights violations in India.
Support Arguments
o Muslim minority is unsafe in India. For instance, the Indian government violates many human rights through its repressive administration over Kashmir. Human rights abuses in Illegally Indian-Occupied Jammu and Kashmir (IIOJ&K) range from mass killings, enforced disappearances, torture, rape and sexual abuse to political repression and suppression of freedom of speech.
o Indian Security Forces operate with pretty much impunity in IIOJ&K. The draconian security laws, e.g. Jammu and Kashmir Public Safety Act 1978, The Armed Forces Special Powers Act 1990, Prevention of Terrorism Act 2002, give extraordinary powers to Indian security personnel to shoot and kill unarmed civilians. These infamous laws encourage the use of lethal forces in IIOJ&K against innocent people.
o The U.N. office of the High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR) released two reports in 2018 and 2019 accusing India of grave human rights violations in Kashmir and called for the formation of a commission of inquiry into the allegations.
o According to Kashmir Media Service, since 1989, Indian forces have committed numerous crimes against innocent Kashmiris; detail as follows:
o Total killings – 100,178
o Custodial killings – 8,532
o Civilians arrested – 164,931
o Structure destroyed / damaged – 109, 247
o Women widowed – 22,899
o Children orphaned – 107,758
o Women gang-raped / molested – 11,107
o Pellet guns’ injuries – 3,800
o Similarly, Muslims in India are increasingly becoming victim of Hindutva terrorism as they are incorrectly portrayed as “children of invaders” whose ancestors exploited Hindus for centuries. On this pretext, their fundamental human rights, including life, liberty and freedom of expression, are denied and they’re regularly targeted for their beliefs. – PR
