Some of the crimes which in the developed societies are investigated with great passion and punished with unconcealed relish, are usually pushed under the carpet or put in the cold storage in our country. I can cite here the example of the countless cases of high corruption that our Supreme Court and its venerated Chief Justice have handled in the past few years. I am unaware of even a single culprit who has met a befitting end in this respect. Our Judiciary’s success has been only in the area of making headlines. Ironically our learned judges have cultivated such an irresistible taste for these headlines that they don’t mind being loaded with more work in the area of examining the misdoings of those in office. Tax-evaders continue to steal public money. The office-holders continue to plunder the nation. Rules and regulations continue to be flouted. There is no respite anywhere. And there is no rest for the judiciary. The judges keep working day and night.
Shouldn’t we look up at them with admiration and envy?
It is not their fault that despite their ceaseless hard work, not only does the cycle of crime keep expanding but also do the criminals keep rejoicing in their sense of security.
Our Judiciary has invested a lot of its effort and energy in the protection of the human rights of those who are suspected of having disappeared from the scene because of their loss of favour with those responsible for the security of the state.
Not denying the importance of the ‘rights’ of any citizen of the state, let it be recognized by those concerned that the right of this country to defend its interests and security against the concealed or perceived acts of treason is by no means any less sacred.
This phrase ‘missing persons’ has became a pain in the Nation’s neck. Those hundreds and thousands who have perished in the acts of violence and terror at the hands of the champions of various kinds of causes, also deserve to be regarded as MISSING.
I am an old-fashioned patriot. I believe that there should be zero-tolerance for those engaged in the crime of wilfull treason against the country. They cannot be allowed to enjoy any kind of rights.
