When we think of our follies, foibles, failures, failings and frailities, we cannot but feel ashamed of being what we are. The ‘OUR’ of this proposition includes each one of this country’s populace, whether he or she is living so far below the line of poverty that he or she can hardly be regarded as ‘living’. Or is enjoying life so far above the line of poverty that he or she can have no idea of what ‘hunger’ ‘deprivation’ or hardship are.
But when we think of the power of the ‘Faith’ we belong to, and of the ‘Potential’ our country has in almost every area vital for growth and progress, we can’t help getting flooded with Hope.
The area in which we have constantly been handicapped and are suffering is Leadership.
Neither Democracy and Civilian Rule, nor Dictatorship and Military Governance have succeeded in pulling this country out of its inertia, and of its resignation to its follies, foibles, failures, failings and frailities.
But let us tell ourselves that our history has only just started taking shape. We have an opportunity to learn from our experiences. One great lesson that we can learn from our brief history is that no system is inherently great and productive—-it is made so by the quality, the mindset and the moral strength of those who run it.
Another lesson we should learn is that this country because of its pecular background, ethos and structure requires an umbrella of Civil-Military harmony, in order to provide a Leadership that can effectively realize and release its potential.
One great source of satisfaction and strength for us in this case is that our Military, unlike most others in the world of the Crescent has an Islamic Soul.
