ISLAMABAD, December 27: In an apparent big relief for the Nasla Tower victims, the Supreme Court of Pakistan (SCP) ordered authorities for an immediate confiscation of the Nasla Tower after Attorney General of Pakistan (AGP) Khalid Javed Khan apprised the court that neither Sindh government nor tower’s builder have been paying to the victims.
The SC has attached the Nasla Tower case with the Nasla Tower plot case and ordered the Karachi Commissioner for complete demolition of the building within 15 days using all resources.
The SC also sought an implantation report from the Anti-Corruption Chairman and DG East in a week. The SC also ordered a separate FIR against the SCBA officers in Ferozabad Police Station.
AGP Khalid Javed Khan apprised the court that the victims have not been getting the money from any party -the Sindh government and the builder. He said that the plot allottees must get the profit from selling the remains of Nasla Tower.
The Karachi Commissioner also informed the court about the progress report of demolition. Earlier, a 65-year-old woman who was evicted from her flat in Nasla Tower in compliance with the Supreme Court order died in Karachi on Saturday.
Reportedly, Shamim Usman, 65, who was a former employee of the Pakistan International Airline was under extreme mental stress when the administration started throwing out the Nasla Tower residents on the apex court’s order. She owned Flat No. 104 in the residential complex.
When she got the eviction notice, she ran from post to pillar to save her house. She appealed to the Supreme Court, Sindh Governor Imran Ismail, Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Karachi commissioner, but all her pleas fell on deaf ears.
Dejected and disappointed, the poor woman suffered from the great mental strain which ultimately claimed her life. The Supreme Court directed that the park be handed over to the KMC in two weeks. The SC was hearing hearing an application against alleged commercial activities on premises of Askari Park.
“You are sacrificing your lives for the country [and] we value that. Return the land [to the original owner],” Justice Amin said. The court directed that Askari Park be handed over to the KMC administrator within two weeks to be “used for the public”. It directed the municipal corporation to demolish the wedding hall and shops and install its own rides in the park.
Pertinent to note that in a hearing on Nov 25, the apex court had issued notices to the Karachi administrator, commander engineer, Corps-V, and others on an application against using the Askari Park near old Sabzi Mandi for commercial purposes. -DNA
