Mohammad JamilAccording to reports carried by the US media on Saturday, US President Barack Obama supports President Ashraf Ghani in a dispute between the Afghan leader and Abdullah Abdullah, his chief executive. President Obama has asked Afghan CEO Abdullah Abdullah not to interfere with the Afghan president’s constitutional powers. State Department spokesman John Kirby said: “The president regularly speaks with President Ghani and with Chief Executive Abdullah to discuss security, governance, and other bilateral and regional issues.” From the Laconic text of the report by a journalist, Abdullah Abdullah is against President Ashraf Ghani’s visit to Pakistan for attending the meeting. He says that the meeting should be held in Kabul. In fact, Abdullah Abdullah is under the influence of the remnants of former president Hamid Karzai, inducted by him in Kabul administration, and also in National Directorate of Security (NDS), which is working in liaison with the RAW.
President Barrack Obama was under ‘scrutiny’ by the political analysts, commentators and more so by the Muslims throughout the world after the promises he made in Cairo in first week of June 2009. Neocons, warmongers and those who hate peace had gone in hibernation for the time being, wished to see Obama use his soft visage to restore America’s credibility. President Obama’s gestures about negotiations with Iran without preconditions; a president who talked about Hamas as a legitimate organization that represents part of Palestinian society, but that needs to relinquish violence; who spoke with empathy about Palestinian sufferings; who spoke about security not only for Israelis but also for Palestinians; who said that all the settlements are illegal; who called for nuclear disarmament of the entire region, had given a new hope to the world.
US President Barrack Obama was perhaps destined to restore America’s image by clearing the mess created by his predecessor George W Bush. Not that earlier American presidents were any less ambitious in imperialistic outreach and designs, however George W Bush had caused colossal damage to American interests due to his misguided policy of regional transformation. His flawed policy of implanting democracy in Middle East, using military to topple unfriendly regimes and replace them with the friendly ones, proved a complete disaster. Today, America is in deep trouble in the Middle East, in South Asia and elsewhere, and it has become difficult for military-industrial-corporate complex to fund the war theatres opened by former president George Bush. The latter was also responsible for entering into a dangerous US-India nuclear deal whereby India got the privileges of a nuclear-weapons state without responsibilities that go along with it.
In October 2015 during an interview with CNN, former British Prime Minister (PM), Tony Blair had apologized for his ‘mistakes’ including lies about weapons of mass destruction in Iraq, and admitted that IS had emerged because of the invasion of Iraq. But it is tantamount to shedding crocodile tears. Anyhow, President Obama is poised for paradigm shift in its policies that could restore image of the US to quite some extent. Last year, Iran and six major world powers had reached a nuclear deal after more than a decade of negotiations. The world had hailed the nuclear deal; President Barack Obama termed the agreement as “major step to a more hopeful world”. Of course, Saudi Arabia and Israel were unhappy over the deal for different reasons, but they failed to achieve their objective of keeping Iran in isolation.
This weekend President Barack Obama will be visiting Cuba to sort out and remove obstacles to travel and commerce with Cuba and in the revival of diplomatic relations. The three-day trip to Havana marks the first time a sitting president will set foot in Cuba in nearly nine decades. According to insiders, the Obama administration is preparing to further ease restrictions and green light projects by U.S. companies in connection with the trip. Starwood, the hotel chain whose brands include Sheraton and Westin, is expected to receive a license from the Treasury Department in the coming days to operate hotels in Cuba, following extensive conversations with both Cuban and U.S. officials. The Obama administration is also poised to remove yet another roadblock for those who wish to visit Cuba by allowing Americans to travel independently, rather than in organized, group trips.
