Tribal society in its crudest form existed in Arabia of the pre-Islamic era. This era can be said to have spread over thousands of years. Arabia had not known the concept of Statehood and the State Laws before the Prophet of Islam (PBUH) established the State of Madina around 622 AD. Precisely why it is universally recognized that the Charter of Madina was the first written constitution of the world. Never in history had the countries of the world been ruled by the Laws incorporated in written Constitutions. The words of the kings or rulers used to be regarded as the laws of the land.
It is strange that God chose Arabia the most primitive and backward tribal society on the earth for the introduction of Constitutional era in mankind’s history.
It is ironic that some of the societies in the world which still passionately cling to tribalism and its traditions belong to the regions ruled by the Crescent. Our Pakhtoon brothers living in a vast area called KPK and FATA have not allowed Islam to liberate their lives from the excesses of primitive tribalism. They are infact proud of the traditions that remind us of the practices of the tribal chiefs who fought against Islam and its Prophet (PBUH).
Not meaning thereby that the entire Pakhtoon society is tribalised. Some of the most dedicated practicing Muslims I have met in my life happen to be Pakhtoons. I have often thought that if the entire Pakhtoon areas allowed themselves to be inundated by the tidal waves of Islamic thought, Pakistan would become a conquering nation. Let it be remembered here that those who are massacring human beings in the name of Islam, are as divorced from the teachings of our Prophet (PBUH) as midnight is from midday.
