The model of assistance to needy families Food for Work, which is now being implemented around the world, is the result of the work of the WFP country office in Kyrgyzstan, Minister of Labor, Social Welfare and Migration Kudaibergen Bazarbaev said at the meeting with Ram Saravanamuttu, Acting Country Director of the World Food Program (WFP) in the Kyrgyz Republic.
“This program has shown its effectiveness in Kyrgyzstan. Now the Ministry of Labour, Social Welfare and Migration together with WFP is starting to introduce new mechanisms to lift people out of poverty. We will move from passive forms of assistance to active forms, when poor families are offered tools and material support to start a business, to run their own households,” said the Kyrgyz minister.
At the meeting it was noted that active social protection measures involve mobilization of the population for the development of sustainable rural and agricultural infrastructure and community assets, income-generating activities (horticulture, gardening, fish farming, agroforestry, fodder production, processing) and vocational training. The WFP, in collaboration with the Ministry of Labor, Welfare and Migration and other partners, has launched a national program of short-term training and counseling, mainly in agricultural areas such as animal husbandry, crop production, storage and processing of agricultural products.
