Sharmeen Obaid Chinoy directorNEW YORK: A screening of Oscar-winning film-maker Sharmeen Obaid-Chinoy’s documentary A Girl in the River was held at the United Nations to a packed-to-capacity hall.Organised by Pakistan’s Mission to the UN and co-sponsored by UN-Women in conjunction with Equality Now, it was a side event during the 60th annual session of the Commission on Status of Women (CSW).
Following the screening, a film and panel discussion was held which attracted an audience from across the globe. Members of the Pakistan delegation, currently in New York to represent the country at CSW meetings, were also present.
Pakistan’s Ambassador to the UN Dr Maleeha Lodhi took the opportunity at the occasion to introduce Raheela Durrani as the country’s first female Speaker of the Balochistan Assembly. Obaid-Chinoy won in the Best Documentary Short Subject for A Girl In The River: The Price of Forgiveness in the 88th Academy awards. The documentary which sheds light on honour killings in Pakistan follows the story of a teenage girl shot in the face by her own family. “This is what happens when determined women get together,” she had said as she accepted the golden statuette.
