LAHORE, February 9: Joint Action Committee notes with concern and strongly condemns government’s recent whimsical action to curtail the authority and powers of the IHC restored HEC Chairman, Dr. Tariq Banuri.
JAC believes that the measure is in blatant disregard of the clear orders of the Islamabad High Court restoring Dr. Banuri as Chairperson HEC with full powers and authorities. It seems that the undermining the sanctity and respect of institutions has become the hallmark of the present government, it can only destroy and not rebuild. JAC also considers this is personalized action of individuals who do not want to be accountable backed by a govt who never tires of its accountability mantra but does not practice the same. We also believe that institutions evolve with time and experience and need reforms which hurts vested interests who in the present instance are resisting with manipulation and intrigue. It is ironic that due to such actions based on personal and self-interests quality and standards of higher education are suffering by curtailing initiatives for reform. The autonomy and independence of HEC has to be safe guarded; it cannot become a subordinate department of the Federal Education Ministry. It must be pointed out that rendering the premier regulatory body dysfunctional it is the quality of education and standards required in today’s word are being jeopardized and the future of our youth is at stake. JAC therefore demands that government shall immediately take back these decisions and refrain from interfering in the affairs of the HEC and allow the Chairman to function freely under the defined mandate and role.-PR
