President of Turkmenistan Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov during the online cabinet meeting on Friday approved the National program for 2022-2025 to turn Turkmenistan a tobacco-free country and the Action Plan for its implementation. The new program aims to develop national standards for determining the status of a tobacco-free country, to strengthen tobacco control through special monitoring of policy implementation and enforcement of laws in this area, to raise awareness of the population, especially young people, on the negative effects of tobacco smoking.
According to the signed Resolution on the approval of the program, Turkmenistan also established Interdepartmental Coordination Commission for the implementation of this National Program and approved its composition.
After approving the program aimed at turning Turkmenistan into a tobacco-free country by 2025, President Gurbanguly Berdimuhamedov emphasized that the implementation of planned measures will directly serve strengthening of health and, therefore, increase the prosperity of the Turkmen people.
The Turkmen Leader stressed the importance of healthy lifestyle and continuing the purposeful work aimed at eradicating addictions in the modern Turkmen society, developing mass physical culture and sports.
The new program was developed by the Ministry of Healthcare and Medical Industry of Turkmenistan together with the relevant ministries, sectoral agencies and international organizations.
In July last year, Turkmenistan adopted new rules for trade in tobacco products.
