The question to be asked today is not whether the Military has any right to interfere in the domain of the civil, but whether the 1973 Constitution (which is given virtually Divine Sanctity by the politicians of the country) has succeeded, for even a brief period of time, in giving the Nation a stable, result-oriented corruption-free and people-friendly governance. I have always maintained that the system we call Democracy is in effect and fact ‘elected oligarchy’ in which the ruling classes acquire legitimacy from a faulty, dishonest and doctored electoral process. The power in this system always remains in the hands of the rich representatives of the elite of the country.The first requirement of Executive of the Country should be elected by the direct votes of the masses, and not by handful of oligarchs who buy their way into the parliament.In my humble opinion there is no real difference between the election to the Chief Executive’s office, of Pakistan’s civil and Military rulers. They all got where they got through manipulatory indirect vote.I believe the first-ever directly elected Chief Executive of the country will make the great difference we are yearning for. For that goal to be achieved, this Constitution will have to be thrown into the junkyard of history.
