The first emergence of Russia had been as the dominant colonializing power in the structure of the Communist Soviet Union. Now it is Russia’s second emergence that is taking place. It is as the flag-bearer of fierce Nationalism as had been Nazi Germany under Hitler. This is not an attempt to bracket Putin with Hitler.
Putin is one hundred percent Putin—a product of Kremlin’s KGB bureaucracy who has risen from the ashes of the Soviet Union and transformed his wounded national pride into an indomitable political force.
The recent episode of Crimea’s jump into the Russian boat and the current revolt of the Russian nationalists against the Ukrainian government are only the beginnings of a new Global Power struggle certain to take place in the remaining part of this decade and in the coming decade (or decades).
That the unprecedented power that the U.S has been enjoying since the Spanish war in the early years of the last century is now in retreat goes without saying. America has bled itself economically to virtual ‘limpness’ in the two wars it unleashed in this region (Afghanistan & Iraq). And in these years Russia has reconstructed its Present and its Future on purely Nationalist lines.
Pakistan has to secure a place for itself in the new World scenario emerging with Russian advance and American retreat. That China will remain Pakistan’s truest ally on the basis of commonality of interests is an established fact. But otherwise the goals of our foreign policy are as vague and undefined as are the thinking processes of the leadership in charge.
