Every year, thousands of tourists come to Uzbekistan, to visit the heart of Uzbekistan with their own eyes. This place is the main attraction of the country, thanks to the unique architectural ensemble. The Registan ensemble is an architectural complex consisting of three madrassas – Ulugbek, Tillakori and Sherdor – in Samarkand’s Registan Square. According to the information, Ulugbek madrasah was built in 1417-1420, then Ulugbekkhanaqah was built in 1424, Mirzoyi caravanserai in the north and AlikaKokaldoshJuma mosque in 1430. Next to it, there is a wooden hatamkori-style mosque Muqatta and Abusaid madrasah.
In the 20s and 40s of the fifteenth century, Registan became a luxurious architectural ensemble. In the seventeenth century, the governor of Samarkand YalangtoshBahodir built the Sherdor madrasah instead of the ruined Ulugbekkhanaqah, and the Tillakori madrasah mosque instead of the Mirzoyi caravanserai.
Everyone who visits the Registan ensemble will be amazed by the colorful tile ornaments, embossed roofs and huge domes of the complex.
Another important aspect is that the Registan complex is recognized as the most prominent example of ancient, scientific, educational institutions in the area and the art of urban planning in the east. The Timurids proudly said: “Whoever doubts our strength, let them come and see the buildings we have built.”
In 2001, the complex – three madrassas – were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. It is noted that although the word “Registan” itself means “sandy place”, Registan Square has historically been the scientific, political and religious center of the city.
According to sources, on the southern side of the Registan there were khanaqahs and mausoleums called “Childukhtaron” among the people. They were built by Kuchkinjihon in the sixteenth century. Unfortunately, they were reduced to rubble after the 1904 earthquake, which was completely destroyed in 1910 and the site became a field.
But during the years of independence, a huge restoration and repair work was carried out on Registan Square. These days thousands of tourists visit this magnificent complex.
