Deputy Foreign Minister of Iran for Economic Diplomacy Mehdi Safari in a meeting with Deputy Foreign Minister of Turkmenistan Vepa Hajiyev in Tehran on Tuesday expressed Iran’s readiness to increase cooperation with Turkmenistan in the fields of oil, electricity, and gas swap. The talks took place on the sidelines of the meeting of deputy foreign ministers of the Economic Cooperation Organization (ECO).
The sides discussed the expansion of economic cooperation, especially in the fields of energy, transportation, and transit, the Iranian Mehr news agency reports. Safari also emphasized the readiness of Iran to facilitate transportation along the north-south corridor. The Turkmen Deputy Foreign Minister also stressed the need to increase trade relations and interactions in order to expand ties between the countries.
In November last year, Turkmenistan, Iran and Azerbaijan signed a gas swap agreement. The swap supplies of Turkmen natural gas to Azerbaijan through Iran has started in January this year. The Iranian side is currently negotiating the gas swap from Turkmenistan to Armenia. The ECO is an intergovernmental organization which was founded in 1985. The organization members are Afghanistan, Azerbaijan, Iran, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Pakistan, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Turkey and Uzbekistan. – Business Turkmenistan
