Turkmenistan on Sunday celebrated the Turkmen Carpet Day with a number of solemn events.
The Turkmen capital Ashgabat hosted the main celebrations – XXII conference of World Association of Connoisseurs of Turkmen Handmade Carpet Weaving themed “Heavenly Beauty – Turkmen Carpet”, the Exhibition of the Trade Complex of Turkmenistan and the ceremony of awarding carpet weaving women, the country’s official media reports.
President Serdar Berdymukhamedov in his welcoming address to the exhibition participants said, “Turkmen carpets, striking in their beauty, craftsmanship, and color palette, have absorbed the mentality of the Turkmen people. The placement of carpet ornaments on the state symbols of our country embodies the adherence of Turkmens to the ancestors’ ideas, original traditions, continuity of the national ideology, character and spirit of the people and their confidence in the bright future.”
On this day, there was also a ceremony of honoring the best women in the industry, who were awarded the honorary title of “Türkmenistanyn at Gazanan Halyçysy” (“Honored Carpet Weaver of Turkmenistan”) by the Decree of the Turkmen President for their great services in developing the national art of carpet weaving and in honor of the Turkmen Carpet Day. On the eve of the holiday, the skilled carpet weaver Ogulgerek Berdimuhamedova was also awarded the honorary title of “Türkmenistanyn at Gazanan Halyçysy” by the Decree of the Mejlis of Milli Gengesh of Turkmenistan for her merits in the development of the national art of carpet weaving, decorating carpets with magnificent patterns and many years of hard and conscientious work, professional skills, according to the report.
