Bilawal has once again put his foot into his mouth. Why on earth did he express his reservations over a clause in the constitution which says that a non-muslim cannot become president of the country? Wasn’t it unwarranted? There are many things which are better left unsaid. Was his speech writer ignorant of the fact that it was his maternal grandfather who was one of the draftsman of the 1973 constitution in which a clause was inserted that only a muslim can be the head of the state? Why the hell did he make such a controversial statement at a time when his political party is in the oxygen tent gasping for breath? Such a cavalier approach to politics is going to cost him as well as his political party dearly. Small wonder his father doesn’t consider him mature enough politically as yet to handle political affairs independently.
April 4 is approaching. It was the day the founder of the PPP was hanged in a case billed by many jurists as a judicial murder. The PPP is trying to turn this day into a big event by holding a gigantic public rally near the place where he lies buried. Mere playing to the gallery, however, cannot rejuvenate this party which has fallen on bad days. Z. A. Bhutto must be turning in his grave over what his successors did with his legacy. Bhutto was everything but he was certainly not a corrupt man. Even his worst detractors cannot cite a single example which could cast doubt on his financial integrity. Neither did he buy property abroad nor did he construct any plaza or palatial house or factory in the country or abroad. What a pity that most of his successors have been notorious for their financial shenanigans.
The main problem of this party is its lost identity. The masses had flocked to it because it had promised radical reforms in various sectors of life for the good of the common man and for the eradication of corruption from the society. The common man was shocked when leaders of this party failed to deliver and instead of honoring their word gone back on it. The foremost task before the leader of this party is to reshuffle it from top to bottom in every district of the country by holding fresh intra- party elections for getting rid of the dead wood and the corrupt office bearers. It should be made incumbent that if the party wins the next elections the office bearers won’t be given any office in the government. The job of the office holders of the party would be to keep a close contact with the common man and keep a vigilant eye on their partymen holding government positions and to guide them should they go astray.
POSTSCRIPT: It is being said there was a grouping in our cricket team as a result of which some players intentionally let down its captain. Whose fault it was? If the captain is a weak administrator every player would take him for a ride. We need captains like Kardar or Imran or Dhoni.
