Jakarta (ANTARA) – President Joko Widodo (Jokowi) highlighted the government’s target for the production of 360 million seedlings from 30 nursery centers within a period of three years.
“In the next three years, there will be approximately 30 nursery centers, such as the Rumpin Nursery, with a yearly production of 10-12 million. With 30 nursery centers, we will produce approximately 360 million seedlings per year,” he said. He made statement after attending the launch of the Mangrove Rehabilitation Program and the World Mangrove Center at the Rumpin Nursery, Bogor, West Java, on Friday.
This seedling production target from nursery centers is part of the government’s commitment to controlling climate change and repairing the damaged environment through clear, concrete, and visible actions, he stressed.
Since three years, President Jokowi had instructed related stakeholders to build as many nursery centers as possible.
Starting in 2021, the government had built seven nursery locations, specifically in Bogor, West Java; Toba, North Sumatra; Mandalika, West Nusa Tenggara, Labuan Bajo, East Nusa Tenggara; and Likupang, North Sulawesi. “We are counting on how much seeds we can produce and not from the width of the land,” he emphasized. The president noted that the planting can be conducted on critical land in areas that are prone to landslides.
“Or (the planting can be conducted) in watersheds, especially upstream, and we have already started in Ciliwung,” Jokowi stated. He later explained that the seeds were sent to several districts and cities with vast expanses of critical lands.
“This is a process of environmental rehabilitation. We improve our environment with clear and concrete actions. The steps towards improving the environment are concrete and feasible,” he affirmed.Meanwhile, Jokowi has ordered to conduct rehabilitation of 600 thousand hectares of mangrove land by the end of 2024.
“We have been working on peatlands in Riau, North Sumatra, North Kalimantan, East Kalimantan, and Bali, as we know that mangrove forests can reduce and absorb carbon four times better than tropical rainforests,” he pointed out.
The Rumpin Seed and Nursery Centers spread across an area of 159.58 hectares that comprise a seedling zone, community management zone, education and training zone, and a business development corridor zone, with a production capacity of around 16 million seedlings.
Several facilities available at this location include a germination house area, production house area, and water and sediment pools.
