President of Kyrgyzstan Sadyr Zhaparov received on Friday First Deputy Secretary General of the United Nations (UN) Amina Mohammed. During the meeting, an exchange of views took place on topical issues of cooperation between Kyrgyzstan and the UN, the press service of the head of state reported.
The Kyrgyz president warmly welcomed the guest, congratulated her on her reappointment to the post of First Deputy Secretary General of the UN and wished her further success in her high position.
The president noted the important role of the Organization in ensuring peace and security, solving global socio-economic problems and making important decisions on topical issues on the world agenda.
Sadyr Zhaparov recalled that this year Kyrgyzstan is celebrating the 30th anniversary of its membership in the UN and expressed gratitude for the congratulations of Secretary General António Guterres on this occasion.
He focused on the issue of appointing a new regional coordinator of the UN Counter-Terrorism Office in Central Asia, strengthening his mandate to coordinate projects and management programs, taking into account the Joint Action Plan under the UN Global Counter-Terrorism Strategy for Central Asia and the growing terrorist threats.
The head of state also emphasized the initiative of Kyrgyzstan, adopted at the 76th session of the UN General Assembly on December 16, 2021, to declare 2022 the International Year of Sustainable Mountain Development.
“This year, the Kyrgyz Republic proposed and began to promote the draft resolution of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly, on the announcement of 2023–2027. “Five Years of Action for the Development of Mountain Regions”. Since our country is a mountainous country, we attach great importance to the successful implementation of this initiative,” Sadyr Zhaparov said.
He noted that in September this year it is planned to hold a high-level meeting on sustainable development of mountain areas within the framework of the High-Level Week of the 77th session of the UN General Assembly.
Sadyr Zhaparov added that during this event it is planned to propose a number of initiatives for the implementation of programs and projects that effectively protect the interests of mountainous countries, solve the problems of mountainous regions, programs to create a fund for their development, to prevent natural disasters, sustainable energy supply and access to modern technologies and innovation.
In turn, the First Deputy Secretary General of the UN, expressing gratitude for the warm welcome and hospitality, conveyed the words of greeting from the UN Secretary General António Guterres.
She briefly told the head of state about the purposes of her visit, the main of which is the further development of cooperation between the Kyrgyz Republic and the UN. Amina Mohammed congratulated Sadyr Zhaparov on the 30th anniversary of Kyrgyzstan’s membership in the Organization. The First Deputy Secretary General of the UN noted satisfaction with the work of Kyrgyzstan at the national, regional and global levels.
“We fully support your program to achieve the sustainable development goals. We support all your efforts to develop the country,” she said. The First Deputy Secretary General of the UN also supported the efforts of Kyrgyzstan to amicably resolve the dispute with the Canadian company Centerra Gold Inc.. In conclusion, Amina Mohammed expressed her hope for the participation of the Kyrgyz delegation led by Sadyr Zhaparov in the work of the next climate conference of the parties in November this year.
