ISLAMABAD, March 28: The government has seriously started to consider imposing ban on export of sugar as its price increased upto Rs 10 per kg after giving permission of export.
As per sources, the object to impose ban on export of sugar was to ensure provision of sugar to masses at affordable rates during the holy month of Ramzan.
“Approximately 198,387 metric tonn sugar has been exported so far after giving permission of export by Economic Committee of Cabinet (ECC), due to which its price has been increased by Rs 10 per kg during last three months”, sources added.
The facts and figure released by Pakistan Bureau of Statistics shows that the increase of Rs 0.68 has been indicated in the price of sugar during the last week while in retail market it is over Rs 3.
According to ministry of Industries and Production there were approximately 3.55 million metric tonn reservoirs of sugar in the country but the supply of sugar was likely to reduce in holy month of Ramzan due to its continuous export and there is fear of increase of its price also.
Sources added that two meetings of ministry had bee held under the chair of Commerce Minister Engr Khurram Dastiger Khan to curb the expected shortage of sugar in holy month of Ramzan.
In the meetings, officials of ministry of Industries had expressed their concerns over the increase of sugar prices and proposed to impose ban on the export of sugar, sources concluded.-Online
