In accordance with the recent request of Azerbaijan, Iran is ready to increase the capacity of swap supplies of Turkmen natural gas to Azerbaijan through its territory, the Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi said in a meeting with President of Turkmenistan Serdar Berdimuhamedov in Ashgabat on Wednesday.
The meeting of the Heads of State took place on the sidelines of the sixth Caspian Summit.
Raisi said the Iranian government prioritizes the development of relations and cooperation with neighboring countries, according to the Press Service of the President of Iran. “The implementation of the recently signed cooperation documents and agreements between Iran and Turkmenistan will contribute to further increase the level of cooperation between the two countries,” President Raisi added.
At the same meeting, the Turkmen President Serdar Berdimuhamedow praised Raisi’s efforts to improve relations between the two countries and stressed his country’s willingness to fully implement the memoranda of understanding and agreements reached between the two countries. The tripartite gas swap agreement between Turkmenistan, Iran and Azerbaijan was signed on November 28 in Turkmenistan’s capital Ashgabat on the sidelines of the 15th Summit of Economic Cooperation Organization. Under the agreement, up to 2 billion cubic meters of gas will be annually transported from Turkmenistan to Azerbaijan through Iran. The implementation of the agreement has started on January 1, 2022.
