The recent sectarian killings in various parts of the country do not bode well for the law and order of the country, particularly, during the forthcoming Moharram. This time round, the law and order enforcing agencies would have to work overtime and make extra ordinary security arrangements as a measure of abundant caution during Moharram which is not far off.
The days leading up to Moharram and Chehlum are always crucial because if any untoward incident occur near Moharram its fall out effects invariably disturb the religious proceedings during Moharram. Time was when only a couple of districts in the country were considered sensitive from sectarian point of view. The position now is that very little or no distinction is left between a sensitive or less sensitive district. The entire country has become sensitive. The task of law and order enforcing agencies has, therefore, increased manifold.
It is a pity that despite the fact that the sectarian element is in a minority its nuisance value is many times more than its actual physical strength. There is no gainsaying the fact that many religo-political parties are harbouring them with the result that they have become too big for their boots. The successive governments in this country have been meting out a kid-glove treatment to them because of the fear that if they came down with a heavy hand on them they might lose a substantial portion of their vote bank in addition to incurring wrath of the men of the cloth. Had interests of the state been closer to their heart than their vote bank things would not have come to such a pass today when the lunatic fringe within the religious parties have blown to smithireens the law and order of the country.
POSTSCRIPT: It was certainly no mean achievement to beat England by an handsome margin in the Lords in the first cricket test. There should, however, be no room for complacency. Our bowlers Yasir, Amir, Wahab and Rahat would be feeling confident after their superb performance. Likewise, Asad and Sarfaraz must be in high spirits after facing the English bowling attack for the first time. They should now build up on their performance in the remaining three test matches. If they could face Broad with tremendous confidence there is no reason why they shouldn’t bat with equal confidence while facing Jimmy Anderson who is nursing injury and who might be back soon in action.
