Altaf Hussain is a past master in mouthing bromides against his political adversaries. By doing so he often lands himself and his party into trouble. When it dawns on him that he has put his foot into his mouth he immediately retracts his statement and tenders a public apology but a lot of damage is already done by that time.
It is believed that he has been indulging in excessive drinking ,lately, and often utters irresponsible words when he is not in his proper senses. This is,however,no valid excuse and nobody in his proper frame of mind is going to buy it. His recent highly objectionable utterances has placed his party men in Karachi in a catch-22 situation and they are finding it exceedingly difficult to defend him any more. If the MQM is to survive it would have to find out a proper replacement of Altaf Hussain for whom it would be difficult to survive now as the head of this party. Hubris is always followed by nemesis and it appears he has started meeting his nemesis. Rift had appeared in the MQM when people like Ishratul Ibad and Mustafa Jamal deserted him and it has further widened after the 22nd August 2016 episode.
Providence had bestowed powerful and influential position on him. He could have become another Eidhi among the Urdu speaking community of Karachi had he utilised his position for the good of humanity instead of wasting it in petty politics. The route which he adopted leads to destruction. Mustafa Kamal had a point there when he said that he had spoiled three generations of Mohajars in Karachi. Fascism doesn’t pay in the long run. Hitler was a fascist. One day he had to commit suicide. His alter ego Missoulani was also a fascist. He was hanged upside down by his own people. Altaf Hussain ought to take a lesson from their examples.
