PESHAWAR: The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa government has announced public holiday on first Moharram in connection with the martyrdom of the second caliph Hazrat Umar Farooq (RA).
A handout said that Member Provincial Assembly (MPA) Fazal Elahi met Chief Minister Pervez Khattak and presented to him the recommendations of the Ulema and religious scholars to declare the first Moharram, which is the first month of the Islamic calendar, a public holiday.
The MPA had convened meetings of Ulema and clerics in the province to seek their recommendations, which were submitted to the Chief Minister. In the light of these recommendations, the Chief Minister declared the first Moharram as a public holiday.-Agencies
