Everybody in this country who is anybody takes to the street and blocks the government road to vent his spleen if he has any grouse or grievance against the government or against any government department. He couldn’t care less that this act of his, would cause traffic jam thus putting many people to a lot of inconvenience. It is in the evidence that many heart patients or injured persons needing urgent medical attention get stranded in traffic jams and many of them die also. We have seen many mothers in the family way while on their way to hospitals in acute labour pain delivering babies on roads stranded in the traffic jams on account of road blockades.
The politicians too are no better in this respect. They give a fig to common man. They take out their rallies on busy roads and they stage sit – ins on public thoroughfares without realising that by doing so they are interfering in the daily chores of the common man. The men of the cloth belonging to different sects are also sailing in the same boat.
May one ask all of them a simple question? Why don’t they buy air time and say whatever they want to say to the people through electronic media ?The idiot box today is available in every house throughout the length and breadth of the country and addressing the people through media would also cost them little financially. Must they block the government roads to spit venom on the government or highlight their demands?
It is about time the civil society put pressure on the powers that be to pass legislation forbidding blockade of thoroughfares by any person for airing any grievance which he may have against the government or for pressing for the acceptance any demand. Frankly speaking, the common man is fed up with the grown and growing incidence of road blockades by the people at the drop of a hat. Strict punishment be prescribed in the law for those who block government road and the law and order enforcing agencies be authorised to use force against the offenders. Only with the use of iron hand can sanity be restored on the public thoroughfares.
The traffic police must also stop the practice of halting the traffic while any VVIP is being escorted from airport to the place of his visit and vice versa .It should use chopper for the purpose if the government does not want to end the VVIP culture.
