Rigging in elections has for long been regarded as an exclusive domain of Pakistan. In this context I had the privilege of compiling a White Paper in 1991 which when published under the title of “How An Election Was Stolen” became an instant best–seller. It had been launched by the Late Mohtarma Benazir Bhutto herself. I, in company of the Late Omar Asghar Khan had worked hard to compile that historical document. A case regarding those stolen elections, filed by the Air Marshal (retd) Asghar Khan remains still pending.
It is a strange coincidence that the principal beneficiary of most rigging in our country’s history since the 1980s has been Mian Nawaz Sharif’s Pakistan Muslim League which incidentally also carries the first letter of his middle name Nawaz. Precisely why most analysts tend to believe that Mian Nawaz Sharif more than anyone else in the world knows the art and the science of winning elections. His latest triumph was in 2013 because of which he was catapulted to power yet again.
But the purpose of this piece is to amuse my readers with the disclosure that Donald Trump of the US in league with Vladimir Putin of Russia is planning to steel the next Presidential elections of America through an invasion from the cyberspace. This disclosure has been made in the latest issue of Time.
I am not a man of technology and am in no position to understand how the process of ‘vote-count’ will be affected through interference from the cyberspace. But this much is known to me that it is the process of COUNTING that decides ultimately the fate of any elections.
In this respect please remember the Florida Count 2000. Also how a number of the PML (N) candidates were able to score impressive victories in 2013 through ‘efficient’ and ‘effective’ counting.
The names of Sardar Ayaz Sadiq, Khwaja Saad Rafique and Khwaja Asif are unlikely not to come to your mind in this respect.
