How long will nominations on various important cadre posts within the political parties be made from above by the party leaders instead of electing them through intra-party elections? The head of almost every political party worth its salt has so much tightened his grip on his party that like the permanent member countries of the UN security council he can veto any thing which grates on him.
The PPP is still hesitant to hold intra party elections. Nawaz League had recently gone through the farce of them in which it was ensured that only those faces occupy key positions within the party who are yesmen. The same goes for Q League . Only the blue-eyed boys of Chaudri brothers can dream of getting important positions within the party. The religious parties are also no better on this score and they are sailing in the same boat ,barring of course the JI,which has an electoral system in which a party worker from below can also make it to the top.
This being the position, how come our politicians claim themselves as champions of democracy? They can talk a good game about democracy but they don’t play it according to the rules .
POSTSCRIPT: We have lost two important personalities during the past couple of days. A. Nayyar was a versatile singer. God had gifted him with a voice that resembled that of Kishore Kumar ,the noted Indian singer of yore. He gave play back in many Lollywood movies and earned praise of cinegoers.
To think of PPP in Panjab without Jehangir Badr is difficult. He was a PPP activist whose services for the party were appreciated both by Bhutto and his daughter Benazir. He was the mainstay of the party in Panjab. His absence will be missed now as the PPP badly needed workers like him in its bid to bounce back in the country’s politics.
