Zardari wants the government to undertake electoral reforms at once otherwise he would knock the door of the court for the purpose.
Nobody can dispute his demand but there are some questions that need to be answered . What good are these reforms if they don’t incorporate the following demands of the society.
The man in the street wants that first of all it should be made compulsory on all political parties to hold intra party polls and that there should be a complete ban on appointment on key administrative positions inside the party cadres from the top. The people also want that party offices and government positions should be separated. For instance the chairman or president or any other office bearer inside the party should never be a candidate for the country’s presidentship, prime ministership etc etc. For these position persons from the party’s MNAs not holding any party office can be nominated. The civil society also wants ruthless application of Articles 62 and 63 of the constitution by the returning officers at the time of scrutiny of nomination papers so that unscrupulous political element could not enter Parliament. It is also necessary that all appeals against the decision of returning officers are finalised up to the level of supreme court within one month of the decision of RO accepting or rejecting any nomination paper no matter if the concerned appellate courts have to sit round the clock.
