New Delhi: In a tragic incident, a football referee was shot dead by a player moments after he was shown a red card. The incident took place in Argentina, a country famous for producing iconic football players.
According to a report published in The Independent, Cesar Flores, the 48-year-old referee was shot three times — in the head, chest, and neck — by a football player, who was seemingly angered with the red card decision.The report stated that the attacker is presently absconding, even as he is being hunted by the local police.
A 25-year-old player was also shot in the chest during the attack, but is said to have survived and is recuperating at a local hospital.
The shocking incident reportedly took place on Sunday in Campo de la Bribera, the provincial capital of Cordoba in Argentina as the attacker ran onto the football pitch with a gun in hand during the course of the match.
The Independent quoted a police spokesman telling Efe news agency: “We don’t know what happened with the referee but the player was angry and went to get his gun and killed him.”
