Any political leader who fails to keep his word loses his credibility among the general public. This is what is exactly happening to the present ruling government in Islamabad. Its leaders used to mock at the last two governments for keeping bloated cabinets. They used to berate the former two governments for piling up foreign debts. They made a fun of them for living in palatial official residences like Mughal emperors. They lambasted their predecessors for not spreading the tax net far and wide sufficient enough for including the top gun under it also. One can go on recounting the defects which they saw in those who ruled this country from 1985 onwards to 2018, which they vowed to put an end to on coming to power. The common man looks askance at them. His mind goes back to late 1960s when ZA Bhutto too had promised the nation that he would make honey and milk flow in the country and provide ROTI, KAPRA and MAKAAN to all and sundry if he was voted into power. He was elected with a majority in the 1970s election and he did enter the citadel of power too only to disappoint his voters.
Hitherto they have not brought about any appreciable change in the style of government . It is almost the same as it was when those politicians were in power who had been the butt of their criticism. Frustration, despondency and disappointment naturally prevails among the masses, particularly, among the teeming millions of the country who don’t know where their next meal would come from. Let us hope that without wasting any more time the present rulers would make good on their promises.
