Today Pakistan Day is being observed throughout the country so it would be in the fitness of things if we talk about the sayings and deeds of the Founder of Nation. The new generation of this country which has neither seen him nor has thoroughly read his directives need to be apprised about the values he stood for.
One of his ADC writes:One day before the Quaid was to preside over a cabinet meeting in the Governor General’s House, I asked him what should be served to the participants of the meeting, tea or coffee? The founder of the nation posed a counter question to me. Would they come for the cabinet meeting without having breakfast in their houses? He further writes: During cabinet meetings presided over by the Quaid during his life time only plain water was served. Compare that simplicity of the Quaid with the way the taxpayer’s money is squandered by his followers on the snacks served in the official meetings.
Once a near relative of the Quaid visited the Governor General’s House for meeting him and gave to his MS his visiting card carrying his name, in front of which he wrote with his pen the words, ‘ cousin of Quaid- e- Azam’ to be presented to him. When his MS put up the visiting card to him, the Quaid struck down the word ‘cousin of Quaid-e-Azam’with his own hand with red ink and returning the card to his MS told him to tell the owner of the visiting card never ever to introduce himself as his cousin in any government office and he also refused to see him. What was the moral of this step of the Quaid: to discourage nepotism.
Once his ADC put up a bill of Rs 37 which he had incurred on the purchase of some utilities and household items for the Governor General’s House. The Founder of the Nation deducted Rs 10 from it and passed the bill of only Rs 27 and directed his ADC that the remaining amount of Rs 10 be recovered from his sister as he does not consider the money spent on the items bought on her orders as a valid charge on government treasury. Such was the abundant caution which the founder of the nation observed while spending government money.
